Stone<\/em><\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, USA<\/em><\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stone@lsu.edu<\/span><\/em><\/p><p><b><i>Abstract:<\/i><\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This presentation will provide an account of the ancient and medieval \u201cAge of Theory\u201d\u2014the primacy of <\/span><i>theoria <\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in Aristotle and medieval Islamic, Jewish, and Christian neo-Aristotelians\u2014as a prelude to the formulation of a \u201cpost-theoretical\u201d relation between human subjects and aesthetic objects. Drawing upon the early 12<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-century Andalusian philosopher Ibn Bajja\u2019s critique of Plato\u2019s Allegory of the Cave, the aim will be to imagine a way of being (or being with) the object of understanding such that the distinction between object and subject no longer pertains. With Averroes, we will see that the locus of such being is the <\/span><i>image<\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Besides ancient and medieval thinkers, the chief intellectual focus will be on Hegel and on Emanuele Coccia\u2019s 2010 book <\/span><i>Sensible Life: A Micro-ontology of the Image <\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(particularly, on Coccia\u2019s notion of \u201cBecoming What One Sees\u201d). Stone<\/h3><div>\u00a0<\/div><p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400; text-align: right;\">Since receiving his PhD in Comparative Literature from Yale University in 1989, Gregory B. Stone has taught at Louisiana State University, where he is Joseph S. Yenni Professor of Italian Studies. He has served as Director of the LSU doctoral program in Comparative Literature and as Chair of the Department of French Studies for a combined total of more than twenty years. He has taught a wide array of subjects, including literary theory and criticism, philosophy, Old Occitan, Old French, and Renaissance French Literature, and Italian literature. He regularly teaches an Honors College seminar on Dante\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><i style=\"text-align: right;\">Commedia.\u00a0<\/i><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400; text-align: right;\">His primary research focus for the past two decades has been the reception and influence of Islamic and Jewish rationalism in European literature at the dawn of the Renaissance. He is the author of\u00a0<\/span><i style=\"text-align: right;\">The Death of the Troubadour: The Late Medieval Resistance to the Renaissance\u00a0<\/i><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400; text-align: right;\">(1994);\u00a0<\/span><i style=\"text-align: right;\">The Ethics of Nature in the Middle Ages: On Boccaccio\u2019s Poetaphysics<\/i><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400; text-align: right;\">\u00a0(1998);\u00a0<\/span><i style=\"text-align: right;\">Dante\u2019s Pluralism and the Islamic Philosophy of Religion<\/i><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400; text-align: right;\">\u00a0(2006); and\u00a0<\/span><i style=\"text-align: right;\">Guido Cavalcanti: Poet of the Rational Animal<\/i><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400; text-align: right;\">\u00a0(2020).
